The Weeknd Biography and Career:

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, a musician from Canada, is better known by his stage name, The Weeknd. He is a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Using the alias “The Weeknd,” he uploaded several of his songs on YouTube, where they quickly gained widespread attention. After being encouraged to pursue a career in singing by the incomparable Michael Jackson, he went on to be inspired by R&B performers such as Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and The Neptunes. He started in the music industry by giving out mixtapes he produced on his website.

His three mixtapes, titled “House of Balloons,” “Thursday,” and “Echoes of Silence,” were essential in developing a devoted following for him. Critics met each of his studio albums with a favorable reception. Tesfaye struggled with shyness and insecurity as a youngster and made a concerted effort to avoid the spotlight early in his professional career. He tried his best to avoid giving interviews and didn’t even include his photo on the covers of his mixtapes.

On Twitter, he engaged in conversation with his devoted following. On the other hand, when his songs began to top charts all over the globe, he began to feel more confident. He has collaborated with well-known artists like Kanye West, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake. Tesfaye, who wants to be known for being distinct and different from other people, began by adopting a haircut that Jean-Michel Basquiat influenced. This hairdo is now his most distinguishing trait.

On February 16, 1990, in Scarborough, Ontario, The Weeknd was born to his parents, Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye. He is the sole child of his Ethiopian-born mother and Canadian-born father, who emigrated to Canada in the 1980s. Since his father abandoned the family when he was only one or two years old, he has no memory of his paternal grandfather or father. His mother and his maternal grandma raised him. While still taking night classes, his mother worked as a nurse and caterer to provide for her son and his siblings.

His grandmother is the one who taught him Amharic. Hence it is considered to be his native tongue. As a result of the French immersion program he took up to the eighth grade, he is now utterly proficient in the language. West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute were among the institutions of higher learning he frequented throughout his formative years. On the other hand, he was expelled from one school and quit the other school after just six months of attendance. After that, he moved out of his parent’s house and into a house on Spencer Avenue, number 65, where he shared a bedroom with two friends.

When The Weeknd first met the producer Jeremy Rose, he was only beginning his career in the music industry. The two quickly started working on an R&B record that would later be named “The Weekend.” Nevertheless, Rose did not utilize any of the three songs that Tesfaye had written for him—”What You Need,” “Loft Music,” and “The Morning”—during his performance. Tesfaye published the three tracks on a YouTube account he had formed under “The Weeknd” in 2010.

The tracks immediately became famous and were referenced in a blog article featuring rapper Drake’s tunes. On March 21, 2011, he disseminated his first mixtape, “House of Balloons.” It had nine tracks and included songs he had written just for Rose. The mixtape was decided to be considered for the Polaris Music Prize nomination in 2011. After a few short months, he began performing live and working with Drake on joint projects as a singer.

He made a new mixtape, named Thursday, for download on August 18, 2011, with nine songs. On December 21, 2011, he released his third mixtape, “Echoes of Silence.” This one included nine songs, bringing the ‘Balloons Trilogy’ to a satisfying conclusion. The combination of the three mixtapes catapulted his career and turned him into a celebrity in less than a year. Since April 2012, he and his band have appeared at various events throughout the United States and Europe.

After performing at the Coachella Festival in California, he provided sets at the Primavera Sound Festivals in Spain and Portugal and the Wireless Festival in London. It was in September 2012 that he secured a contract with Republic Records. In October of the same year, he collaborated with his record label, XO, to produce a compilation album titled “Trilogy.” The album included all of the songs from his three mixtapes and three new songs that were not included in the mixtapes.

On September 2013, he released his first studio album, “Kiss Land.” The album was met with favorable reviews from music reviewers. Drake, his frequent collaborator for a long time, had a cameo appearance on the song “Live For.” In 2013, he contributed to the score of the blockbuster film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, released in Hollywood. After that, he joined Justin Timberlake on his “The 20/20 Experience World Tour” as an opening act.

In 2014, he worked with Ariana Grande on the duet “Love Me, Harder,” released that same year. In the latter part of that year, he released the single “Earned It,” which was included on the soundtrack of the film “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “Beauty Beyond the Madness” was his second studio album, published by him in August 2015. In the album, which consisted of five tracks, Labrinth, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey all made cameo appearances as special guests. Also, he contributed a song titled “Earned It” to the CD.

On November 25, 2016, he released his third album under his name, titled “Starboy.” Several well-known performers, including Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey, Future, and Kendrick Lamar, made cameo performances on this album, much as they had on his earlier works. He collaborated with Kanye West’s team on the song “FML,” which appeared on Kanye’s album “The Life of Pablo” in 2016. Moreover, in the same year, he was featured on the track “6 Inch” by Beyoncé, which was included in her album “Lemonade.”
