Vince Ferragamo Biography and Career:

An American football player who played quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL), Vince Anthony Ferragamo was born on April 24, 1954. He is a former professional football player who played in both leagues respectively. When he was younger, he participated in collegiate football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the California Golden Bears.

In addition to being an All-American high school quarterback, Ferragamo was voted as the Los Angeles City Schools Most Valuable Player during his time at Phineas Banning High School (1969–1972) in Wilmington, which is located nearby. Ferragamo was born in Torrance, California, and has a high school education. Several institutions made significant efforts to recruit Ferragamo, and he ultimately decided to take a football scholarship to attend the University of California, Berkeley.

Ferragamo was the starting quarterback for Cal for the last three games of his true freshman season in 1972, and he continued to be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season. In 1974, Ferragamo decided to go to the highly regarded Nebraska. During his time with the Cornhuskers, he received letters in 1975 and 1976.

At the beginning of the 1976 season, Nebraska was rated number one, but they could only tie LSU at Tiger Stadium on September 11 with a score of 6–6. According to reports, the two teams engaged in “unrelenting trench warfare.” A win against Texas Tech in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl, played in the Houston Astrodome, culminated in Ferragamo’s collegiate career. The Cornhuskers finished with a 9–3–1 record and were rated thirteenth.

He was named to the All-Big Eight Conference, the All-American team, and the Academic All-American team during his final year of high school education. The Los Angeles Rams (1977–1980, 1982–1984), the Buffalo Bills (1985), and the Green Bay Packers (1985–1986) were the teams that Ferragamo played for throughout his time in the National Football League (NFL).

Ferragamo was selected in the fourth round of the 1977 NFL Draft. During 1977 and 1978, he spent most of his time sitting on the bench, often behind Pat Haden (and, in 1977, an elderly Joe Namath). In 1979, Haden had a finger injury in the middle of the season, which allowed Ferragamo to take the field. In the National Football Conference playoffs, after guiding the 9–7 Rams to victory on the road against the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,

Ferragamo was the only quarterback in the game’s history to start a Super Bowl in the same season he made his first professional start. The season in question was Super Bowl XIV, which occurred in Pasadena. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the underdog Rams by a score of 31–19 after the Rams had led after three-quarters of play.

In 1980, Ferragamo had his most excellent statistical season, during which he passed for 30 touchdowns, which matched him for the second-most touchdowns in the National Football League. Once again, the Rams could qualify for the playoffs; however, they emerged victorious in the wild card game against Dallas by scoring 34–13. Ferragamo moved to the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 1981, owing to a deal worth $600,000 per year. This was a substantial sum even by the standards of the National Football League, particularly when contrasted to the $250,000 that the Rams gave him and the $47,500 that they had paid him for the year 1980.

On the other hand, we need help adapting to the manner of sports played in Canada. He completed 175 of 342 passes (51.2%) for 2,175 yards, but he only threw seven touchdown passes and 25 interceptions. Later in the season, he was relegated to the position of backup quarterback to Gerry Dattilio. After Ken Johnson was acquired via a trade, he transitioned to third-string quarterback for the season’s last three games.

Despite having a terrible season with a record of 3–13, Montreal could still qualify for the playoffs because the East Division was so poor. Ferragamo was in the pressbox watching Montreal’s loss to Ottawa in the Eastern semi-final. He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in December 1980 and July 1981, both within a space of less than eight months.

Ferragamo made his comeback to the Rams in 1982, serving as the backup quarterback for Bert Jones, who could not play due to a neck ailment. Ferragamo passed for 509 yards in a home defeat to the Chicago Bears on December 26, late in the strike-shortened season. At the time, this was the second-best record for passing yards in a game in the league’s history, behind the mark set by former Ram Norm Van Brocklin in 1951. It is still the 15th-best performance in the history of the National Football League as of 2022.

During the 1983 season, Ferragamo was the driving force for the Rams’ return to the postseason, behind the rushing of rookie Eric Dickerson. In the wild-card game, the Rams defeated the Cowboys in Irving, who were the favorites, by a score of 24–17. However, the Washington Redskins, who were the reigning champions of the Super Bowl, defeated them by a score of 51–7. In 1984, Ferragamo was once again the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams.
