Suzanne Collins Biography and Career:

Famous for penning “The Hunger Games,” “Catching Fire,” and “Mockingjay,” Suzanne Collins is a prolific author of young adult literature. After deciding to specialize on writing for the stage, the young woman began producing screenplays for popular animated children’s television shows. She has contributed to children’s television shows like “Oswald,” “Little Bear,” and “Clarissa Explains It All.” After nearly thirteen years in the broadcast industry, she left to pursue a career as a children’s book author. Her first Underland read was Gregor the Overlander, book one in the series.

She credits Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland” for inspiring her to consider what may happen if a character used a manhole instead of a keyhole to enter the world of the book and what they might find there instead of high tea. She wrote other books in the same series after the first one was deemed a bestseller by The New York Times.

She quickly followed that up with the bestselling novel “The Hunger Games,” which sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide and spawned the sequel “Catching Fire,” also a huge commercial success. A second sequel, ‘Mockingjay,’ which was as favorably regarded, followed. With the success of her books, she has carved out a niche for herself as a writer of juvenile and adolescent fiction.

Born on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Michael and Jane Collins, both of whom were employed by the United States Air Force, Suzanne Marie Collins is a member of the armed forces. The girl’s father’s work required the family to relocate frequently across the eastern United States.

She attended the ‘Alabama School of Fine Arts’ in Birmingham, where she majored in theatre. The year was 1980, and she was only eighteen when she earned her bachelor’s degree from the school.

She earned a BA in telecommunications and theatre from “Indiana University” in 1985. Later, in 1989, she earned a degree in Dramatic Writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. ‘Clarissa Explains It All,’ which ran for four years on ‘Nickelodeon,’ was Suzanne’s first foray into creating screenplays for children’s television.

From 1996 through 1999, she penned scripts for hit animated series like “The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo” and “Little Bear.” The latter was adapted from a book by Else Holmelund Minarik and premiered on the British children’s television network Children’s BBC.

Collins also penned the script for the 2001 “Nick Jr.” series about a blue octopus. It was the following year that she and writer Peter Bakalian collaborated on the script for the Fox network’s Santa, Baby! She was also contributing to “Generation O!,” a cartoon comedy show.

The talented author was the showrunner and lead writer for an entire season of the animated series “Clifford’s Puppy Days,” which aired on the Public Broadcasting System and PBS Kids.

At the time, scripts for new episodes of “Generation O!” were being developed. Suzanne was able to meet the author James Promio. Gregor the Overlander, the first book in the series The Underland Chronicles, was her first attempt at writing for children after being inspired to do so by him. ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ published in 2003, served as the novel’s inspiration.
