Baltimore Ravens Biography and Career:

In the National Football League, they are known as the Baltimore Ravens. They are a professional gridiron football club headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland that competes in the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). While still a very new team, having just begun play in 1996, the Ravens have won two Super Bowl championships, in 2001 and 2013, respectively.

Art Modell, the owner of the Cleveland Browns, chose to relocate his historic club and secured an agreement with the city of Baltimore in 1996 to do so. The Ravens were officially established that year. Given that Cleveland agreed to keep the Browns’ name and legacy for a future replacement franchise, the Ravens, who took their namesake from the renowned poem by Baltimorean Edgar Allan Poe, were officially considered resident expansion team when they were established.

As a rookie, the Ravens selected linebacker Ray Lewis in the first round of the NFL draught. Lewis rapidly established himself as one of the league’s most dominating players and contributed to the team’s image as one recognized for its ruthless defense.

Having gone four years without posting a winning record, the Ravens finally achieved success in 2000. The squad won 12 games during the regular season and swept through the AFC playoffs, allowing an average of fewer than 6 points per game throughout the postseason, thanks to the league’s top-ranked defense.

After that, the Ravens handily beat the New York Giants in the Super Bowl XXXV in January of the following year, and Lewis was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player. Lewis was part of a fantastic Ravens team that included other standouts like offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, tight end Shannon Sharpe, and cornerback Rod Woodson, among others.

The Ravens remained competitive for the remainder of the decade, qualifying for the playoffs in six of the ten seasons from 2001 to 2010 (including a loss to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game following the 2008 season) and fielding a defense that finished in the top five in total yardage allowed in six of those seasons.

The Ravens’ excellent performance continued in 2011 when they won the AFC North title and headed to the AFC Championship Game, where they were narrowly defeated by the New England Patriots in a shootout. The next season, the Ravens beat the Patriots in a repeat of the AFC championship game, and, with a victory against the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore won the team’s second Super Bowl triumph in franchise history.

The Ravens’ five-year streak of making the playoffs came to an end in 2013, as they concluded the season with an 8–8 record, snapping their five-year run. The next season, the club returned to the postseason and upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first playoff game before being defeated in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Ravens were plagued by injuries during the 2015 season, which resulted in Baltimore finishing the season with a 5–11 record. The Ravens had a rather successful season in 2016, finishing 8–8 and just losing out on a division championship. As the season progressed, the squad gradually improved, eventually qualifying for the playoffs after winning the division championship in 2018.

The Baltimore Ravens dominated the NFL in 2019, led by second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson and a dynamic offensive strategy that allowed them to establish an NFL record with 3,296 team running yards and finish with a franchise-best 14–2 record. Jackson was named the NFL’s Most Improved Player in 2018. Baltimore, on the other hand, suffered a shocking playoff setback in its first game, falling to a Tennessee Titans team that finished 9–7 during the regular season.
