Beth Phoenix Biography and Career:
Elizabeth Kocianski, the daughter of Polish parents, was born and raised in the town of Elmira in the state of New York. The prize for winning a colouring contest she entered when she was eleven years old was two tickets to a World Wrestling Federation television taping, which she received as a prize. According to Kocianski, it was at this point that she fell in love with professional wrestling and became a fan.
According to her, some of her favourite wrestlers were Bret Hart, Sgt. Slaughter, Owen Hart, and Ted DiBiase, among others. Kocianski attended Notre Dame High School in Elmira, New York, where she was a member of the tennis and track and field teams. When she was in her senior year, she was elected prom queen by her classmates. A graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, Kociaski holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and public relations. He has built a successful commercial career since graduating.
During her time-fighting in the OVW, Kocianski also worked as a waitress at a local restaurant known to Elmira residents as Lights Bakery and Coffee Shop, where she met the man she would marry later in life. During that time, she was married to Joey Carolan, best known by his ring name Joey Knight, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2010 because of infidelity. Their daughter Lyric Rose Copeland was born on December 12, 2013, after meeting and falling in love with Adam Copeland, better known in the WWE as Edge.
They met in September 2011 and married in October 2011. Ruby Ever Copeland, their second daughter, was born on May 31, 2016, and was named after her mother, Ruby Ever Copeland, who passed away in 2015. On October 30, 2016, the pair exchanged wedding vows in front of family and friends. WWE Divas Championship twice and the WWE Women’s Championship three times, respectively, have been won by her in the ring.
Before being selected by the All Knights to train for professional wrestling in the United Kingdom, Kocianski had a successful amateur wrestling career throughout his high school years, winning many competitions. Having made her professional wrestling debut in May 2001, she has gone on to wrestle for a number of different independent organisations during her career. She also made an appearance in the Shimmer Women Athletes tournaments in New York, which were the first of their kind.
When she began working for Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in 2004, she was approached by WWE and offered a developmental contract, which she signed in October of the following year. The Raw brand hosted her professional wrestling debut in May 2006, but she was forced to miss the following month’s show due to a real fractured jaw, which required surgery. Accordingly, she had to undergo a number of surgeries and was sent back to the OVW for extra training. During her stint with the OVW, she won the Women’s Championship twice, albeit her second victory was not recognised by the organisation as a legitimate championship.
In July 2007, she made a triumphant return to the Raw brand, where she was constantly promoted until she eventually overtook the other WWE Divas and earned the moniker “The Glamazon.” It was at the No Mercy pay-per-view in October that she won her first WWE Women’s Championship, which she held for six months before losing it. Her on-screen romance with Santino Marella, known as “Glamarella,” commenced in the following months. She went on to win the Women’s Championship for the second time in August 2008, and she held onto the title for another year, until January 2009.
The only female competitor in the men’s Royal Rumble match in its history, she made history by being only the second woman to do so in January 2010. She went on to win the Women’s Championship for the third time in April, and she retained the championship for a month after that. Despite having previously held the WWE Divas Championship in October 2011, Phoenix was ultimately defeated by Nikki Bella in April of the following year. As the reason for her retirement and departure from WWE was creative frustrations with the treatment of women at the time, Phoenix stated that she wanted to spend more time with her family, which included her boyfriend and later husband Adam Copeland, better known in WWE as Edge, with whom she had two daughters.
Once Phoenix was a member of the WWE Hall of Fame, he returned to the organisation and began working as a part-time colour commentator for the company. The induction of Phoenix into the WWE Hall of Fame made her both the fastest female to be inducted after her retirement and the youngest inductee ever in WWE history when she turned 36 years old.
She was also the first female to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame after her retirement. Her other accomplishments include becoming the first woman to be admitted into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2019, a hall of fame formed in 1993 that is only dedicated to professional wrestlers who have a background in amateur wrestling.
Despite her lengthy absence from the ring, Phoenix has made a few appearances since her comeback, the most notable of which being at WrestleMania 35. As a result of her participation in the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble bout in 2018, she became the first wrestler to have participated in both the men’s and the women’s tournaments. As of May of this year, she has been promoted to the position of full-time colour commentator for the WWE NXT television show.
