Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte Biography and Career:

Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, Ph.D., is a biochemist and developmental biologist. He is also the head of Altos Labs at the San Diego Institute of Science and Technology. Previously, he was the head of the Centre of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona, the Roger Guillemin Chair, and a professor in the Gene Expression Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. In addition, he was the holder of the Roger Guillemin Chair.

He was awarded a Master of Science in pharmacology from the University of Valencia and a Doctor of Philosobinaryn biochemistry and pharmacology from the University of Bologna and the University of Valencia. His postdoctoral education in Europe at the European Molecular Biology Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany, and the University of California in Los Angeles.

While working at Salk, Izpisua Belmonte made significant contributions to developmental biology, organ and tissue regeneration, and studies on the aging process. At Altos Labs, he is developing technologies that can program cells to states comparable to those observed in human life’s early, healthy stages. The ultimate goal of this work is to discover universal health therapeutics that can restore cellular resilience, overcome human fragility and disease, and ultimately extend the amount of time that a person can remain healthy.

For his professional life, Izpisua Belmonte has contributed to the publication of over 500 different scientific articles. TIME magazine named him one of the “50 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2018, and he has been honored with some accolades in recognition of his research.

These honors include the Gold Medal of the Board of Castilla-La Mancha, several honorary doctorates, the National Science Foundation Creativity Award, the National Institutes of Health Pioneer Award, and the President William Clinton Care Award. In addition, TIME magazine named him one of the “50 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2018.

Individuals whose groundbreaking translational research has enhanced cellular reprogramming technology for regenerative medicine are recognized as winners of the Ogawa-Yamanaka Stem Cell Prize. The award was founded in 2015 by the generous donation of the late Betty and Hiro Ogawa, and it has been maintained through their sons, Andrew, and Marcus Ogawa.

Gladstone Institutes supported the prize in cooperation with the Cell Press group, and it was established in 2015 through their donation. It pays tribute to the memories of the Ogawas by carrying on the charitable legacy they established together over their 46-year marriage. In addition, it acknowledges the significance of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), which Shinya Yamanaka, MD, Ph.D., a Gladstone Senior Investigator and winner of the Nobel Prize, discovered.

Izpisua Belmonte serves as the head of the San Diego Institute of Science of Altos Labs, a new life sciences organization whose primary mission is to restore the health and resiliency of cells via the application of cellular rejuvenation programming.

These advancements hold great promise for the treatment of age-related disorders and the slowing of the aging process. His team discovered that a cell’s aging clock might be reset via cell programming. This opens the door for organs to regenerate and renew, slows the course of illness, and extends how long mammals can live healthily. Izpisua Belmonte’s study on growing and repairing human organs earned him a spot on TIME magazine’s list of the “Top 50 Most Influential Leaders in Healthcare” in 2018. This recognition came about as a result of Belmonte’s work.

Through the generosity of Hiro and Betty Ogawa, who both passed away in 2015, the Ogawa-Yamanaka Stem Cell Prize was founded that same year. Through establishing this prize, the Ogawa family intended to inspire and assist individual researchers or medical professionals engaged in groundbreaking work in translational regenerative medicine using reprogrammed cells. The Gladstone and Cell Press company are the kind sponsors of the award.

Shinya Yamanaka, MD, Ph.D., a Gladstone Senior Investigator and winner of the Nobel Award in Physiology or Medicine, was the first person to uncover the possibility of reprogramming adult cells to become stem cells. This award recognizes the groundbreaking work that Yamanaka did. Izpisua Belmonte’s work directly extends this finding; she uses the “Yamanaka factors” to regenerate older cells.

According to Izpisua Belmonte, receiving the Ogawa-Yamanaka Stem Cell Prize for her work on new stem cell models of human organ creation and regeneration is both a pleasure and an honor. Izpisua Belmonte was a faculty member of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies for nearly thirty years. During that time, she became a professor in the Gene Expression Laboratory and was appointed to the Roger Guillemin Chair.

He was awarded a Master of Science in pharmacology from the University of Valencia and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry and pharmacology from the University of Bologna and the University of Valencia. After completing postdoctoral work at the European Molecular Biology Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany, and at the University of California, Los Angeles, he began working at the Salk Institute in 1993. Subsequently, he was promoted to head of the Centre of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona.

After a rigorous evaluation, Izpisua Belmonte was chosen as the contest winner by a panel of impartial stem cell researchers worldwide. On November 17, 2022, at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, California, a ceremony will be conducted during which he will deliver a scientific speech and be awarded the award, in addition to receiving an unlimited reward.
