Karen Kilgariff Biography and Career:
Karen Kilgariff is a comedian, writer, actor, and podcast presenter from the United States. She is perhaps best recognized for her writing credits on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and “The Pete Holmes Show.” She began her career as a stand-up comedian in Sacramento, where she was born, reared, and still resides. She was recruited to play a supporting part on the American sketch comedy program ‘Mr. Program with Bob and David’ after she gained fame for her excellent comedic timing and was featured on the show.
As being approached to become a co-writer for “Ellen Degeneres: Here and Now” in the early 2000s, her career took an entirely new turn as this opportunity presented itself. Later on, she became involved with “The Ellen Degeneres Show” as a writer for the program, in which she also made guest appearances, sometimes playing various characters. Her podcasts, such as “My Favourite Murder” and “Do You Need a Ride?” have helped her establish a solid following in podcast hosting in recent years.
As an actress, she became well-known after making guest appearances on several notable television programs, including “The Book Group,” “Another Period,” “Mr. Show With Bob and David,” and “Wings.” Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered is the book title she and Georgia Hardstark, who also co-hosts her podcast, wrote and published together in 2019.
Karen Kilgariff was born into a family that belonged to the working class on May 11, 1970, in Petaluma, California. Her parents worked in the medical field; her father, Jim Kilgariff, was a firefighter, while her mother, Patricia Kilgariff, was a mental nurse. Laura Kilgariff was Karen’s elder sister while they were growing up together. Her family was devoutly Roman Catholic when she was born.
Her maternal and paternal grandfather had journeyed over the ocean from Ireland to start a new life in the United States. Karen was an average student at school. When she was in her early 20s and had just finished her education at the college level, she had already developed a talent for writing comedy sketches and performing stand-up comedy.
Karen Kilgariff began her career as a stand-up comedian in Sacramento, California, after moving there immediately upon graduation from college. She continued to improve over time, and in 1995, she made one of her very first television performances on an episode of “Bob Hope’s Young Comedians.” On the widely watched program, up-and-coming stand-up comedians took the stage.
She made the trip to Los Angeles in the middle of the 1990s and immediately began looking for jobs in movies and on television. Ultimately, she was cast in the supporting part of a cook in the television series ‘Cybill’ (1996-97). The same year, she had a cameo on an episode of the television show ‘Wings’, playing a supporting character.
By the time the 1990s came to a close, she had already made guest appearances on a wide variety of programs, including “Jenny,” “Tenacious D: The Complete Master Works,” and “Super Adventure Team.” However, these relatively insignificant appearances were not enough to bring her the name recognition and fame that she deserved and craved.
Meanwhile, Karen’s stand-up comedy routines were making their way into more and more American homes through television series such as ‘Premium Blend’ and ‘Make Me Laugh.’Her well-known stand-up routines were primarily responsible for her landing a significant part in the sketch comedy series ‘Mr. Show with Bob and David’ in the year 1997.
During 1997 and 1998, she was a guest on the show for 14 episodes, during which she played various roles in several comedic skits. Her rise to prominence in the business was aided by the program’s relative success, in which she starred. Both “Heroes of Comedy: Women on Top” and “The Martin Short Show” included her as a guest star in which she portrayed her real-life self.
Because of the lack of progress in her acting career, she began to depend more and more on her writing talents to further her professional career. Karen was given writing credit for three episodes of the television show ‘Hype’ in the year 2001. Following that, she penned the screenplay for a short film titled “The Girls Guitar Club,” in which she also starred. At this time, she made the acquaintance of the well-known comedian Ellen Degeneres, and her life was forever altered as a result.
After seeing Karen’s work on television in 2003, Ellen Degeneres engaged her to assist with writing her next documentary film, “Ellen Degeneres: Here and Now.” After being shown on HBO, the stand-up comedy act became a smashing hit with audiences. This event began the pair’s long and fruitful history of working together.
