Lewis Hamilton Biography and Career:

When Lewis Hamilton presented himself to McLaren team manager Ron Dennis at an award ceremony in 1995, he launched himself on the road to become a Formula One driver. The nine-year-old approached Dennis, asked for his signature, and introduced himself as “Hi.” Hello, my name is Lewis Hamilton. In the British championship, I came in first, and I want to be racing in your vehicles one day.”

It won Hamilton the patronage and backing of one of the leading Formula One teams, which culminated in his being offered a Formula One drive 13 years later. In the process, Hamilton equaled and then surpassed the accomplishments of his idol Ayrton Senna, a former McLaren driver, by winning three consecutive championship championships. Prior to that, there was the minor issue of progressing through the lower tiers of racing, which Hamilton accomplished with a number of remarkable victories along the way.

It was via the use of radio-controlled (RC) automobiles that Hamilton first became acquainted with racing. Hamilton’s father Anthony purchased him one in 1991, and when he was six years old, he finished second in a national RC racing competition. In Hamilton’s words, “I was racing remote-controlled vehicles and winning club championships against grownups.” Hamilton recalled the experience. Following that, Anthony began to wonder whether Lewis’s abilities would be transferable to the world of full-size racing.

In his first year of karting, he won the British karting championship (cadet class) and the STP karting championship. He started racing at the age of eight and won the title two years later. Hamilton continued to compete in cadet class racing in 1996, winning the Champions of the Future series and going on to win the Sky TV KartMasters Championship and the Five Nations Championship as well as other honors. Following that, he rode for Junior Yamaha and won the Champions of the Future series once again, as well as the Super One series, and was crowned British Champion for the second consecutive year.

The following was scrawled in Hamilton’s autograph book by Dennis at their first meeting: “Phone me in nine years, and we’ll figure things out then.” Upon signing with McLaren, he was formally accepted into the company’s Driver Development Support program. In fact, he was the youngest driver ever to be signed by an F1 team when he was only 13 years old. The pact contained guarantees of financial and technical assistance, as well as a future possibility to compete in Formula One if the situation warranted it.

In the same year, he advanced to the Junior Intercontinental A level and finished second in the McLaren Mercedes Champions of the Future competition. He also competed in the Italian Open Championship, where he finished fourth. More Junior Intercontinental teams are being formed. In 1999, there was a breakthrough. He was the Vice European Champion, the winner of the Trophy de Pomposa, and placed fourth in the Italian Open Championship for the second year in a row.

This was also the year in which he competed in Intercontinental A and won the Italian ‘Industrials’ Championship title. The next year’s karting results in an even larger number of victories. He was the European Champion in Formula A, having won all four of the competition’s rounds.

He has also won the World Cup Championship in Japan, the Elf Masters in Bercy, France, and reached the second round of the Italian Open, among other achievements. In recognition of his accomplishments, the British Racing Drivers’ Club inducted him as a ‘Rising Star’ Member in 2007.

His first encounter with Schumacher happened in 2001 when the German driver made a surprise appearance at his home circuit, Kerpen, in Germany. Hamilton ended in second place behind Ferrari’s Alessandro Nivola, who had won four world championships at that point.

Hamilton stayed with McLaren for the 2008 season, with Fernando Alonso departing to be replaced by Heikki Kovalainen in the Ferrari team. Hamilton’s solution to the heartbreak of losing the title at Interlagos was to win the very next race, the season-opening race in Melbourne, the following season.

Hamilton, on the other hand, was less collected in his second season than he had been in the first. His races in Bahrain, Canada, France, and Japan were all marred by serious blunders. Moments of great elegance were intermingled among the bad ones – particularly when it poured. At a drenched Silverstone, he dominated the field, reaching the finish line moreover a minute ahead of anybody else on the same lap.
