L.A. Lakers, a professional basketball club headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States They are one of the most successful and well-known professional sports teams in the United States. NBA and Basketball Association of America (BAA) championships have been won by the franchise, tying them with the Boston Celtics for most in league history.
It was created in 1946 as the Detroit Gems and competed in the National Basketball League before being known as the Los Angeles Lakers (NBL). To honor the state’s moniker “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” the Lakers were renamed in 1947 when the franchise relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Lakers grabbed George Mikan in the same year, and he went on to become the first dominating “big man” in professional basketball and the first of many great Laker centers. During the 1948–49 BAA season, the Los Angeles Lakers won the last BAA title. When the NBA was created in 1949, Lakers greats Jim Pollard, Slater Martin, Vern Mikkelsen, and Clyde Lovellette, together with future Hall of Famers Jim Pollard, Slater Martin, and Vern Mikkelsen, won four of the first five league championships.
After Mikan’s retirement in 1956, attendance at Lakers games decreased, and the club relocated to Los Angeles in 1960–61. Once Magic Johnson was drafted in the first round of the 1979 NBA draught, the Los Angeles Lakers started the most powerful period in their history. He won five NBA titles alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, and other Lakers star from 1982 forward (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988).
At the height of the “Showtime” period, not only did Johnson and polished head coach Pat Riley create a showy, sometimes spectacular playing style but also did Hollywood icons as Jack Nicholson appear courtside. Another factor in NBA popularity in the 1980s was a revitalized Lakers-Celtics rivalry—the two teams competing for the NBA championship in 1984; 1985; and 1987; and, more particularly, a struggle between Johnson and Larry Bird.
The Lakers’ fortunes took a turn for the worst with Abdul-retirement Jabbar’s in 1989 and Johnson’s retirement in 1991. However, despite frequent postseason participation (the Lakers have missed postseason play just five times in its first 60 seasons), the franchise has the longest drought of any team in NBA history without making it to the championship game. When new head coach Phil Jackson was brought in for the 1999–2000 season, he led the Lakers, including Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, to the first of three straight championships.
However, despite O’Neal’s departure in 2004, Los Angeles Laker squad led by Kobe Bryant made it to the NBA finals in 2008, where they lost to Boston Cavaliers in six games. Next season, the Lakers made it to the NBA finals for the 15th time, defeating the Orlando Magic in five games to win the title. A thrilling seven-game finals matchup against the Boston Celtics saw the Lakers win their third straight NBA championship in 2009–10.
It was then that the Los Angeles Lakers commenced a period of relative decline, which peaked in the 2012–13 season. Even though the team was expected to win the title, it struggled through an injury-plagued season that concluded with it being eliminated from postseason contention in the first round.
Steve Nash and Dwight Howard were both signed in the preseason. Bryant and Nash both missed much of the 2013–14 season due to injury, which substantially contributed to the Lakers’ losing record. Howard departed the team in the off-season. The second-place Los Angeles Lakers finished with a dismal 21–61 record in Bryant’s absence due to another injury. In Bryant’s last season before retiring, the club went a franchise-worst 17–65.
Nine victories were added to the team’s record in 2016, but the Lakers’ four-year postseason drought prompted an overhaul of the team’s front office. Johnson was instrumental in luring free agency LeBron James to the Lakers in the 2018 off-season, but the club failed to dramatically improve and Johnson unexpectedly left at the conclusion of the 2018–19 season.

Bryant was killed in a helicopter accident in January 2020, and the NBA was forced to cease play less than two months later due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The season continued in July, albeit with a reduced schedule and the players confined to a “bubble” of their own.
