New England Patriots Biography and Career:

National Football League (NFL) franchise headquartered in Foxborough, Massachusetts, that competes in gridiron football (NFL). The Patriots have won six Super Bowl victories (2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019), as well as 11 championships in the American Football Conference (AFC).

The Boston Patriots were established in 1960 as a member of the American Football League (AFL), and they rapidly established themselves as a competitive club, led by quarterback Vito (“Babe”) Parilli, linebacker Nick Buoniconti, and wide receiver Gino Cappelletti, among others. In their second season, the Patriots finished with a winning record and progressed to the AFL championship game in their fourth season, respectively.

However, after a second-place divisional finish in 1966, the club went on to lose seven straight games. As well as finding a permanent home stadium, the Patriots had to play in four separate locales in the Boston region over the course of ten years. The franchise, which became a member of the NFL after the 1970 merger of the AFL and NFL, moved to Foxborough in 1971 and was renamed the New England Patriots.

It was in 1986 that they progressed to their first Super Bowl when they were defeated by a dominating Chicago Bears club, 46–10. It would be eleven years until the Patriots would return to the Super Bowl, this time under the supervision of coach Bill Parcells and with quarterback Drew Bledsoe at the helm of the offense. New England was defeated by the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI, but the team’s playoffs presence marked the beginning of three consecutive seasons of postseason football for the Patriots, which was at the time a club record.

Bill Belichick was hired as head coach of the New England Patriots in 2000, marking one of the most momentous decisions in the franchise’s history. Over the course of his career, Belichick has created a formidable club around unheralded experienced free agents (such as linebacker Mike Vrabel and running back Corey Dillon) as well as astute draught choices.

An injury to Bledsoe in 2001 opened the door for Tom Brady, a relatively unknown sixth-round draught pick, to take over the Patriots’ offense and lead them to an unexpected Super Bowl victory the following February. Brady would go on to establish himself as an outstanding quarterback, leading the Patriots to four more Super Bowl titles in 2004-05, 2015, and 2017—18.

To obtain All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss before the 2007 season, New England made a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and went on to set numerous offensive records, including the only 16–0 regular-season record in NFL history, before falling short to the underdog New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Despite the fact that Moss was moved away before the 2010 season, the Patriots remained one of the most prolific scoring teams in the NFL because of an effective passing offense spearheaded by quarterback Tom Brady, wide receiver Wes Welker, and versatile tight end Rob Gronkowski, among others. New England had the top record in the AFC in both 2010 and 2011, and the club progressed to a rematch with the Giants in the Super Bowl after the 2011 season, which is lost.

The team’s consistently strong performance continued well into the second decade, culminating with a 12–4 record in each of the next two seasons and a trip to the AFC championship game in each of the following two seasons. In 2014, the Patriots won 12 games and had the best record in the AFC, on way to capturing the conference title and qualifying for their sixth Super Bowl appearance in the Brady-Belichick era, which occurred in Atlanta. Eventually, they defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl to claim the championship.

With their 12th division triumph in 13 years, the Patriots headed to the AFC championship game, where they fell to the Denver Broncos in a heartbreaking matchup. The next season, the Patriots finished with an NFL-best 14–2 record and cruised through the playoffs en way to a second straight AFC title. In the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots rallied from a 25-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime, completing the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to capture their fifth title.

In 2017, the Patriots went 13–3 to win yet another division title on their way to an NFL-record 10th Super Bowl appearance for the club in the process. The Patriots were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a nail-biter in the Super Bowl, handing the franchise its fifth Super Bowl defeat in franchise history. After winning another division championship and earning the second seed in the AFC playoffs last season, the Patriots’ juggernaut extended its domination in 2018.

Following a dominant victory in the divisional round, the Patriots defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in a nail-biting AFC championship game to go to their third consecutive Super Bowl. In that game, which was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history, the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams, 13–3, to win their sixth championship and tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl victories. Despite winning their 11th consecutive AFC East title in 2019, the Patriots failed to earn a bye into the first round of the postseason for the first time in ten years, and New England was eliminated from the playoffs in its first game. The Patriots’ streak of consecutive division titles is an NFL record.
