Roger Waters Biography and Career:

Roger Waters is Pink Floyd’s mastermind and the creative power behind landmark albums like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Waters became a strong composer when Syd Barrett left the band. Still, his string of albums in the ’70s, each of which approached symphonic proportions, solidified his reputation as a unique figure in rock music, known for his somber morals and dry sense of humor.

After Waters departed from Pink Floyd during 1983’s The Final Cut, he released a trilogy of concept albums tackling present-day personal and political struggles: The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, Radio K.A.O.S., and Amused to Death. In 1992, Waters stopped focusing on making new rock music and instead created classical works, worked as an activist, and revived his live performances of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

Waters did not pick up an instrument until he was over 20. The loss of his father, Eric, a schoolteacher who had refused to serve in World War Two as a conscientious objector, loomed large over his youth. Roger Waters was only five months old when his father, Eric, was killed in action, prompting his mother, Mary, to relocate the family to Cambridge.

While Waters had already met Syd Barrett and Dave Gilmour at this point, the original iteration of Pink Floyd did not emerge until he began studying architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic. With the departure of original members Keith Noble and Clive Metcalfe, Waters, Nick Mason, and Rick Wright formed a new band with new members Barrett and Syd Barrett.

This occurred in the autumn of 1963, and by 1965 the band had solidified into what would become known as the Pink Floyd Sound; the “Sound” was dropped in 1966. Barrett had already established himself as the band’s undisputed leader by this point, having written the songs for the group’s initial singles and their 1967 debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn; however, Waters’ first original composition, “Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk,” was included on the same album.

Barrett quit Pink Floyd in 1968 to be replaced by David Gilmour because of his mental instability. Floyd’s following expanded considerably during the subsequent years. While the band often wrote music together, Waters had the most tracks written by himself. In 1970, he worked on the soundtrack for the film The Body with Ron Geesin, another solo project, although on the albums Meddle (1971) and Obscured by Clouds (1972), Floyd shared songwriting duties.

Waters had extensive creative control on Dark Side of the Moon, released in 1973. He wrote all the lyrics, came up with the idea, and was credited as a songwriter on all but three of the tracks. Dark Side became Pink Floyd’s defining record, a phenomenon that has stood the test of time. Wish You Were Here, inspired in part by Barrett’s Death, was released by the band in 1975, while 1977 brought the nightmarish Animals.

Waters wrote the semi-autobiographical rock opera The Wall after experiencing an emotional withdrawal from his audience on tour in support of Animals. The band decided to record Roger’s The Wall rather than his solo debut, The Advantages, and Disadvantages of Hitchhiking, which he presented to them in 1984.

Wright departed the band and became a contract player during the production of The Wall, but the resulting double album in 1979 was a huge success, and Alan Parker adapted it into a film in 1982. A requiem for the post-war dream by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd,” The Final Cut was released in 1983 under Waters’s leadership as the band’s leader. This subtitle alluded to the tensions among the group, which ultimately led to Waters’ departure.

With 1984’s Pros & Cons (including Eric Clapton on lead guitar), Waters formally quit the band in 1985 and sued to have them disband the following year. Waters resumed his career while Gilmour, Mason, and Wright remained as Pink Floyd when his claim was dismissed. In 1986, Waters included songs on an animated version of When the Wind Blows; in 1987, he released the ambitious concept album Radio K.A.O.S., touring the globe to promote the record.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, Waters decided to resurrect The Wall as an all-star tribute concert in Berlin in July 1990; Floyd only played a few gigs in 1980, owing to its high cost. Amused to Death, an antiwar concept album starring Jeff Beck on guitar, was released two years later, marking his first album for Columbia. Despite lacking a promotional tour, the album succeeded, earning a silver certification in the United Kingdom.

In 1999, Waters resumed traveling with the inception of the In the Flesh Live world tour. In 2004, he published two anti-war songs, “To Murder the Child” and “Leave Beirut,” on the Internet and sought to start a Broadway adaptation of The Wall. In 2005, Pink Floyd performed at the Live 8 event in Hyde Park, marking their first public appearance together since 1979. Despite being met with praise, the band chose to remain apart rather than unite.

In 2005, Waters published the opera Ca Ira, and he toured for two years with The Dark Side of the Moon starting in 2006. This tour’s popularity prompted Waters to organize a traveling production of The Wall, which ultimately surpassed Dark Side in revenue and was the highest-grossing solo tour until 2013. Two years later, in November 2015, Waters released a soundtrack and a theatrical documentary titled Roger Waters’ The Wall, documenting this successful production of The Wall.

Waters recorded his first album of new material since 1992’s Amused to Death, titled Is This the Life We Want? with producer Nigel Godrich, best known for his work with Radiohead. The album was released in June of 2017 and debuted at number three in the U.K. and eleven in the U.S.

Waters’s version of The Soldier’s Story by Igor Stravinsky, which featured the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, was published in 2019. The concert film Us + Them, filmed during Waters’ 2018 tour in support of Is This the Life We Want? Premiered to a small audience in theatres in 2019 and will be released on home video with an accompanying soundtrack in 2020.
