San Jose Sharks Biography and Career:

Located in San Jose, California, the San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey club that competes in the Western Conference of the United States. They are a part of the National Hockey League’s Pacific Division of the Western Conference, which includes the Los Angeles Kings (NHL). The Shark Tank, the team’s home arena in San Jose, is known as the HP Pavilion among locals.

From 1967 through 1976, the Oakland Coliseum Arena served as the home of the California Golden Seals of the National Hockey League. After becoming minority owners of the Seals in 1974, Gordon and George Gund played a key role in the team’s relocation to Cleveland in 1976 and its subsequent merger with the Minnesota North Stars, which they acquired the following year.

They had hoped for years to bring hockey back to the Bay Area, and in the late 1980s they applied to the NHL for permission to relocate the Minnesota North Stars to the area, but the league denied their request. Meanwhile, a consortium headed by former Hartford Whalers owner Howard Baldwin was lobbying the NHL to relocate a franchise to San Jose, where a new arena was being constructed.

The NHL declined to comment. Once a compromise was reached, it was agreed that, in exchange for the Gunds selling their share of the North Stars to Baldwin’s group, the Gunds would receive an expansion team in the Bay Area, which would begin to play in the 1991–92 season and be permitted to transfer a certain number of players from the North Stars to their new club. In exchange, the North Stars would be permitted to compete in an expansion draught alongside the new Bay Area franchise on an equal footing with the latter.

After formally selling their portion of the Minnesota North Stars to Baldwin on May 5, 1990, the Gund family received a new franchise for the Bay Area, which was situated in San Jose. For the new team, almost 5,000 prospective names were submitted by postal submission. While “Blades” was the first-place finisher, the Gunds were worried about the name’s possible negative link with weaponry and chose the runner-up, “Sharks,” instead.

Several sources have claimed that the name was inspired by the enormous number of sharks that live in the Pacific Ocean. There are seven distinct types of sharks that reside there, and one section of water near the Bay Area is known as the “red triangle” because of the large number of sharks that live there.
