Atlanta Hawks Biography and Career:
Founded in Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team in the NBA. The Atlanta Hawks are a member of the Eastern Conference’s Southeast Division (NBA). State Farm Arena serves as the team’s home venue. The Atlanta Hawks may trace their ancestry back to the Buffalo Bisons, a team that was established in 1946.
For the National Basketball League’s Bisons, Buffalo Memorial Auditorium served as their home court. The Erie County American Legion formed the club, which was coached by Nat Hickey. On November 8, 1946, the New York Yankees played their inaugural game, defeating the Syracuse Nationals 50–39.
William “Pop” Gates, one of the first two African-American players in the National Basketball League, played for the club. Even though the team’s goal was to gather 3,600 people every game to break even, just 1,000 supporters showed up at the Auditorium on any given night.
As of December 25, 1946, Leo Ferris stated that the club would be relocating from Buffalo to Moline, Illinois, which was then part of the “Tri-Cities” region: Moline, Rock Island, and Davenport, Iowa. The franchise lasted just 38 days.
To better reflect their new location in Moline, Illinois, the Tri-Cities Blackhawks adopted the moniker “Tri-Cities” and began playing their home games at the 6,000-seat Wharton Field House. Took second place in scoring for the Blackhawks in 1948 behind Don Otten, who went on to win the National Basketball League MVP award. One of the first African-American coaches in a major sports league, Gates led Dayton to its first win against an all-white team in 1948.
After a merger of the 12-year-old National Basketball League and the three-year-old Basketball Association of America in 1949, the Blackhawks became one of the NBA’s 17 inaugural clubs (BAA). The Chicago Blackhawks were eliminated from the playoffs after failing to advance beyond the first round. The Tri-Cities region was clearly too tiny to sustain an NBA franchise at that point. A new team was formed in Milwaukee after the season and became known as the Milwaukee Hawks.
The Hawks selected eventual NBA MVP Bob Pettit in the first round of the 1954 draught. As a result of this, they relocated to St. Louis, which was Milwaukee’s beer rival, in 1955 and renamed the club the St. Louis Hawks. For the second time in three years, the Hawks proceeded to the NBA Finals, where they avenged their loss to the Celtics in 1957 by winning the series 4–2. This time, the Hawks were able to duplicate their success with the signing of youngster Lenny Wilkens. However, they fell in the Finals against the Boston Celtics in five games. For most of the 1960s, they would be contenders, making it to the playoffs and winning multiple division championships.
A year later, the team elevated Mike Fratello to head coach after acquiring superstar Dominique Wilkins in 1982. During the 1984–85 season, 12 home games were held to the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana, due to low attendance. For $1.2 million, Barry Mendelson paid for the Hawks’ six games in New Orleans, which resulted in a 6–6 record.
In 1985 and 1990, Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan engaged in an epic Slam Dunk Contest rivalry. Slam Dunk Contest Champion Spud Webb and Coach of the Year Award Winner Fratello were both honored in the 1986 NBA season.
For three seasons in the 1980s, the Hawks were one of basketball’s best teams, winning at least 50 games each year. In 1986–87, they set a franchise record of 57–25, which lasted until the 2014–15 season. Due to a lack of success, they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, losing to eventual winners Boston and Detroit.

The Omni was to be replaced by a new arena around this period. As a result of the Omni’s weathering steel architecture, the arena is expected to survive for decades. A humid subtropical environment in Atlanta would have been overlooked by the planners and architects.
As a consequence, despite its age of 25 years, it never ceased rusting. There were a number of conditions that had to be met before Turner could take over the Atlanta Thrashers, one of which was that they needed a new venue. The Omni was eventually dismantled to make way for a new arena for the Atlanta Hawks and the NHL’s expansion Thrashers.
Atlanta returned to Alexander Memorial Coliseum after the playoffs, and the Georgia Dome was utilized for larger-capacity games until Philips Arena opened before the 1999–2000 season. NBA All-Star Rasheed Wallace played one game with the Atlanta Hawks in February 2004.
Wesley Person, Abdur-Rahim, Ratliff, and Dan Dickau were moved from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Hawks in exchange for Wallace. When he appeared in one game with the Hawks, Wallace scored 20 points, had six rebounds, five blocks, two assists, and one steal in a defeat to the Nets. A three-way transaction with the Boston Celtics saw him traded to the Detroit Pistons after the game.
As a result, the Hawks received Bob Sura, a center, and a first-round lottery selection from Detroit. To finalize the transaction, the Boston Celtics sent forward Chris Mills to Atlanta but Mills never got the opportunity to play for the Hawks. They finished the 2003–04 campaign with a 28–54 overall record. For the first time in a decade, an Eastern Conference club hosted the All-Star game in Atlanta in 2003.
Joe Johnson was acquired by the Hawks in the summer of 2005 in a sign-and-trade agreement with the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Boris Diaw and two future 1st round draught selections. The Atlanta Hawks were ranked second in the NBA draught lottery in 2005, despite having the poorest record in the league the previous year (the first pick went to the Milwaukee Bucks). The Hawks picked North Carolina forward Marvin Williams with the second overall selection. Shelden Williams was drafted by the Hawks with the fifth overall choice in the 2006 NBA draught.
The 2008–09 Hawks season was the team’s first winning season since 1999, with 47 victories. As of December 30, 2013, Atlanta Hawks forward Al Horford has had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the remainder of the season.
