Hillsboro Hops Biography and Career:

In addition to being situated in Hillsboro, Oregon, which is part of the greater Portland metropolitan area, the Hillsboro Hops are a Minor League Baseball franchise. Currently, they are members of the American League’s Northwest Division. It is due to their affiliation with the Arizona Diamondbacks that they are considered members of the High-A-West and play in the division known as the Hops. The stadium where they play their home games, Ron Tonkin Field, was constructed in 2013 and has been in use since then. Despite poor development on a new ballpark to replace their subpar home field, the Yakima Bears of the Northwest League began looking into relocation options as early as 2011 despite the team’s mediocre home field.

The squad desired to relocate away from the city’s worsening economy in order to forge a more promising future for themselves and their supporters. Following a failed attempt to relocate the club to Vancouver, Washington, the team received an offer to relocate to Hillsboro, Oregon, in June 2012, with the goal of beginning plays the following season. The club accepted the offer. After reaching an agreement with the team, which was accepted by the town council on June 5, as well as the League of Professional Baseball and the franchise on June 8, the deal was signed on June 5. The agreement between the city and the team was reached on June 26 and is likely to be approved by Major League Baseball by the end of the month of August.

Despite the fact that the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 4,500-seat stadium took place on September 21, the Hillsboro Hops were not officially christened until October 16. After being founded in Portland, the Hops were an affiliate of the Pacific Coast League’s Beavers until the team was moved to Tucson at the conclusion of the 2010 season. It wasn’t possible to see minor league baseball in the greater Portland area during 2011 and 2012. The Hillsboro Hops played their first game on June 14, 2013, against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and were defeated 3–2 in a shootout.

Ryan Gebhardt had the club’s first hit, while Brian Billigen drove in the team’s first run with a sacrifice fly to give the squad its first RBI. After a 1-0 loss to the Eugene Emeralds on opening day at Hillsboro Ballpark on June 17, the squad earned its first victory on June 18 against the Portland Sea Dogs. A sellout audience of 4,710 people witnessed Jordan Parr hit the first home run in the history of the Hops when the team’s inaugural home opener was played in front of the home run record. Barley, the team’s mascot, first appeared on the field on June 28, 2013, and has since gained widespread recognition.

As a result of their home stadium’s record-breaking attendance of 138,732 fans in 2014, the Hops established a new franchise attendance record. They also won the divisional and league championships, as well as the league championship as a whole. The team was coached by J. R. House, who had former major leaguers Doug Drabek and Mark Grace on his staff, as well as other former major leaguers. The team was captained by J. R. House. Against the Vancouver Canadians, who were defending champions for the third year in succession, Hillsboro won the championship series in straight games. In 2015, the team set another franchise attendance record, drawing a total of 143,412 spectators on 38 occasions (an average of 3,774 fans per game).

Aside from that, they also won their second consecutive league title. The Hops were the hosts of the 2017 National Women’s League All-Star Game. With their sixth consecutive postseason appearance on August 28, 2019, the Hops broke the Vancouver Canadians’ previous Northwest League record of five consecutive postseason appearances, which stood at five. It was their first time back in the Northwest League postseason since 2015 when they took on the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, whom they defeated 2–0 in the divisional round to advance. For the first time since 2015, they advanced to the championship round.

The latest of these occurred on a three-run home run by Andy Yeezy in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 1, which gave Hillsboro a 3–1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 2. Although the Hops were defeated in Game 2 (9–1), they rallied back to claim victory in Game 3 with a two-run ninth-inning rally to secure the victory. When the Hops were down 6–0 in Game 4, it was because of Royal’s miscue. Finally, Hillsboro earned its third National Women’s League championship and first since 2015 in Game 5, capping off a 3–2 triumph in the season-ending series.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the Minor League Baseball season has been postponed until further notice. As part of Major League Baseball’s reorganization of Minor League Baseball in 2020, the Hops were moved to the High-A-West along with five other teams from the Northwest League. The Hops were then reassigned to the Northwest League in 2021. They will continue to operate as the High-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the foreseeable future.
