The Chicago Cubs play their home games at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Despite their lack of success, the Cubs have one of the most dedicated and popular fans following in baseball. The Cubs are NL champions and have won three World Series (1907, 1908, and 2016). The Chicago White Stockings were an early success in the NL, joining in 1876. Cap Anson led the squad to six of the first 11 NL titles. The squad was known as the Colts and the Orphans until adopting the name Cubs in 1903.
Although they fell to the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox in the World Series, the Cubs had their best season in 1906. The Cubs won the World Series in 1907 and 1908, becoming the first club to do it. Weeghman Park (opened in 1914) was renamed Wrigley Field in 1926 and is now the second oldest baseball stadium still in use (Fenway Park opened in 1912). The club won the NL in 1910 and 1918. The Cubs dominated the NL from 1929 to 1938, winning four pennants (1929, 1932, 1935, and 1938) behind Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, and Rogers Hornsby. In the 1932 World Series, Babe Ruth purportedly called a “called shot,” pointing to center field and hitting a home run there.
The Cubs won the NL pennant in 1945, their first winning season since 1938. The World Series that year began the “Curse of the Billy Goat” (versions of the story vary). In the fourth game of the World Series, Billy Sianis was ejected from Wrigley Field for bringing his goat, and he cursed the team. The Cubs wouldn’t win a World Series for over 70 years! After 1945, the Cubs’ history is defined by enormous disappointment. From mid-August until the end of the season, the Cubs led their division by eight and a half games, until falling eight games behind the World Series champion New York Mets. To end the Cubs’ World Series drought in 1984, a ground ball got between first baseman Leon Durham’s legs in the fifth and decisive game, letting the Padres win.
The Cubs led the Florida Marlins 3-1 in the NLCS in 2003. The Cubs were five outs away from the World Series when crowd interference thwarted outfielder Moises Alou’s attempt to snag a pop foul near the seats (the so-called Bartman incident). That game—and series—was lost. Despite these setbacks, the Cubs won 10,000 games in 2008, only the second franchise in MLB history. The Cubs won the NL Central Division in 2007 and 2008, and qualified for the playoffs both years, led by manager Lou Piniella, first baseman Derrek Lee, third baseman Aramis Ramrez, outfielder Alfonso Soriano, catcher Geovany Soto (Rookie of the Year in 2008), and pitchers Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, and Ted Lilly.
The Cubs enjoyed a good season in 2009 but missed the playoffs, and began a long losing streak the following season. They hired GM Theo Epstein in 2011, who had put together the 2004 Boston Red Sox club that broke the franchise’s 86-year title drought. On the other hand, Epstein surrounded the Cubs with young talent, including third baseman Kris Bryant and first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The following year, they won 103 games, their most in over a century, and easily won their division. The Cubs rallied to win the NLCS and earn their first World Series spot since 1945.
The Cubs won three straight games to overcome a 3–1 series deficit against the Cleveland Indians to win their first world championship in 108 years. In 2017, the Cubs made it to their third straight NLCS, where they were defeated by the Dodgers. In 2018, the Blackhawks made their fourth consecutive playoff participation, however, they were eliminated in the Wild Card Game. The Cubs won just 84 games in 2019 and missed the playoffs after a late-season meltdown in which they lost five consecutive one-run games. The Cubs made the playoffs in 2020 but lost in the Wild Card round due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Epstein left the team in the off-season.
A long losing streak destroyed Chicago’s prospects of making the postseason in 2021, as the Cubs lost several key players including Rizzo and Bryant. Among the Cubs’ Hall of Famers is shortstop Joe Tinker (1902–12, 1916), second baseman Johnny Evers (1902–13), and first baseman Frank Chance (1898–1912). Aside from Mr. Cub, other Hall of Famers include infielder Ernie Banks (1953–71), outfielder Billy Williams (1959–74), second baseman Ryne Sandberg (1982–94, 1996–97), pitcher Ferguson (“Fergie”) Jenkins (1966–73, 1982–83), and third baseman Ron Santo (1960–73). The seventh-inning stretch is a Wrigley Field home game tradition. From 1982 through 1997, legendary sportscaster Harry Caray led the crowd in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”
