David Cameron Biography and Career:
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2016, David Cameron (full name David William Donald Cameron) was born on October 9, 1966, in London, England, and is the head of the Conservative Party in the country.
Cameron, a descendent of King William IV, was born into a family that had both material riches and an aristocratic heritage, which he used to his advantage. He went to Eton College and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he received a first-class degree in philosophy, politics, and economics in 1988. He was born in London and raised in Oxford. Following his graduation from Oxford, he joined the Conservative Party’s Research Department.
When he joined the government in 1992, he was appointed as a special advisor to Norman Lamont, then the chancellor of the Exchequer, and the following year, he was appointed to the same position by Michael Howard, then the home secretary. Cameron began his career in the media industry in 1994 as director of corporate relations for Carlton Communications. He remained at Carlton until he was elected to the House of Commons in 2001 as the Member of Parliament for Witney, a town northwest of London.
Cameron, who is youthful, moderate, and charming, soon gained notoriety as the leading member of a new generation of Conservatives in the United Kingdom. A common comparison was made between him and former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, who had gained a similar reputation when he first joined Parliament 18 years before him. After just two years in the House of Commons, Cameron was elevated to the Conservative Party’s “front bench,” establishing him as the party’s most senior spokesperson in the chamber.
In 2004, Howard, by then the party’s leader, promoted Cameron to the position of head of policy coordination, putting him in charge of putting together the Conservatives’ electoral program for the 2005 election. After suffering a crushing loss in the polls, the Liberal Party was forced to resign, prompting Howard to step down. David Cameron’s confident address at the Conservative Party’s annual conference in October 2005 completely altered his public image, and he was later voted as the party’s leader.
Cameron aimed to modernize the party and disassociate it from its right-wing reputation. When asked about tax cuts, he responded by saying that economic stability and robust public services will take precedence in the future Conservative administration. It was during his leadership that the Conservative Party gained in popularity and took first place in the 2006 municipal elections, marking the party’s greatest performance at the polls in more than 15 years.
Conservatives started to lag behind in the polls immediately after Gordon Brown was elected to replace Tony Blair as Labour leader and prime minister in 2007. This led to speculation that the prime minister may consider calling a quick election to capitalize on Labour’s momentum. Labor conducted its party conference in September, having gained a double-digit lead over the Conservatives at that point in the election cycle. Cameron, on the other hand, delivered an amazing address at the Conservative Party conference in early October, speaking for more than an hour without reading from a script.
Cameron slammed Brown for ruling out a referendum on a reform treaty at the upcoming European Union summit in Lisbon (contrary to the prime minister’s commitment to hold a referendum on a European constitution). Cameron was referring to the upcoming European Union summit in Lisbon, which will negotiate a treaty on reform. Cameron was critical of Labour’s record on crime and with relation to the National Health Service, among other things, in addition to its performance on other subjects (NHS). The most audacious thing he did was to provoke the prime minister into calling an election, despite the fact that he was lagging in the polls:
A great deal of attention was drawn to the performance, and after it, Brown indicated that there would be no general election until 2009. Earlier in the month, following Brown’s attendance at the EU summit in Lisbon, where the 27 member countries agreed on the specific wording of the treaty, Cameron reiterated his earlier criticism, claiming that Brown had “absolutely no democratic mandate” to sign the treaty without holding a referendum. By December, the Conservatives had established a commanding lead in opinion surveys, outpacing Labour by as much as 13 percentage points, the largest such advantage for the Conservatives since 1989.
The worldwide economic crisis of 2008 aided Cameron in his efforts to strengthen the Conservatives’ dominance. Despite the fact that Brown was generally lauded outside of Britain for his reaction to the crisis, his pledge in 1997 that the days of economic “boom and bust” were past, as well as an internal uprising by Labour ministers in 2008, worked to Cameron’s favor.
Having made good on a commitment to withdraw the Conservatives from the European People’s Party, a mainstream coalition of conservative parties in the European Parliament, Cameron did so in March 2009. After winning the European Parliament elections on June 4, Cameron was able to get the Conservatives into the legislative body as members of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, which is composed of conservative and reformist members of the European Parliament.
When the Daily Telegraph reported on widespread misuse of expense accounts by members of Parliament intended to offset the cost of maintaining a second property, it sparked a parliamentary-expenses controversy that had been festering since 2007. (the so-called Additional Costs Allowance). However, while the scandal cut across party lines, Labour bore the brunt of public criticism, prompting Prime Minister David Cameron to argue that the people had a “right to be upset.” Despite a fall in polling ratings for Cameron and the Conservatives from their highs in early 2009, he and the party seemed to be in a strong position ahead of the general election on May 6.
